Biography
Keely Mitchell is a Two Spirit artist whose work is profoundly influenced by the culture and history of the Ottawa Nation of Oklahoma and their Irish heritage. Born and raised deep in NDN Country (NE Oklahoma), as an enrolled Anishinaabewke, Mitchell draws inspiration from the rich traditions and stories passed down through generations. This cultural heritage serves as the foundation for much of Mitchell's artistic expression.
At the age of 18, Mitchell made a bold decision to join the Air Force, seeking to escape the restrictive environment of the Quiverfull cult. The years spent in the military were transformative, providing new perspectives and experiences that continue to influence Mitchell's art. In 2021, an honorable discharge due to a permanent and total disability brought Mitchell's military career to an end.
Today, Keely Mitchell resides on a small farm in rural West Texas, where the tranquility of nature and the rhythms of farm life provide a serene backdrop for creativity. The daily activities of gardening and painting offer both therapeutic and artistic fulfillment. Mitchell's work is a unique fusion of traditional Ottawa motifs, contemporary themes, and elements inspired by Irish culture, reflecting their mixed heritage.
This blend of cultural influences is encapsulated in the business name, O’tawa Fine Arts, symbolizing the harmonious fusion of Ottawa and Irish identities. Through exhibitions and community involvement, Mitchell is dedicated to sharing the beauty and significance of these cultures with a broader audience. Each piece not only tells a personal story but also serves as a celebration of the enduring spirit of the Ottawa Nation and the rich legacy of the artists’ Irish roots.
